‘Jugaad’ fix!!

Wondering what ‘Jugaad’ is, right?? It’s a buzzword in modern use which is easily misunderstood by common people.

Jugaad is colloquial Hindi (Indian language) for an innovative fix or improvised solution which simply needs creativity and imagination rather than expensive experiments. Other countries have their own terms. In Brazil it’s called jetino, which means to make a way. It is genuine creativity performed with cleverness i.e doing more with less. Simply put, it’s a quick workaround to get through commercial, logistic or law issues and not with bribery and manipulation.

So why am I talking about Jugaad? Unlike others, Friday was a hectic day for me as I had a 7 AM flight to catch for a day meeting and then 7 PM flight back home which explains my most recent “biz book” purchase from airport bookshop (a guilty addiction) – Jugaad Innovation.

We all need innovation that is faster, adventurous, able to do more with less and reflect the realities of today’s economic environment. Technology has become obsessed with innovation and “out of the box” thinking and there are companies that make a living on developing such products/services. Even primary and secondary schools hold contests while companies are hosting events for the same. I am totally awed by Google who inspire younger generation to  such as Google Science Fair where recently Brittany Wenger,  a 17-year-old, who built a computer program to diagnose breast cancer. Ofcourse, not a Jugaad but surely an innovative approach. Google RISE is another such platform.

America spent $550 billion on innovation alone last year. In the future, we won’t be able to afford to continue that. Scarcity is the mother of invention. Enter Jugaad innovation. With the drying up of capital, stagnating economy and increased competition from emerging economies, we can’t afford funding our old way of innovating. Jugaad innovation is innovation which does the exact opposite of the managed innovation of the West. It’s nimble, flexible, frugal, DIY, works closely with consumer groups and is inclusive. It helps products in emerging markets emerge–it’s a veritable midwife of ingenuity.

Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, says his mantra for success in this new world which he believes aligns with jugaad innovation is: “Be purpose inspired; change comes from the edge; devote yourself to world-changing ideas; emotion leads to action; creativity overcomes scarcity; in tough times you need to win ugly.

Jugaad can happen anywhere. M-Pesa is an amazing example of a truly transformative innovation in Africa where number of people don’t have bank accounts but they have mobile phones. M-Pesa enables them to do is things that people who have bank accounts take for granted, which is sending money, receiving money, saving money, and spending money.

Since I’m a person who avoids making big changes, I wasn’t expecting to like this book. I love it! It challenged my thinking in a way that nothing has for a very long time. The insights into frugal innovation are wonderful, but the motivation you get from, “If they can do it, so can I!” is priceless.

As the adage goes “A knife in the hands of a thief is dangerous but in the hands of a surgeon is reassuring.” so is the case with Jugaad. It’s the mindset one should look at and focus on the positive, the ones that can make a change.

Please Note: Your perspective might be skewed if you have read “The Innovator’s Dilemma: The Revolutionary Book That Will Change the Way You Do Business” or other prominent book on innovation. This book is an energetic and complelling read for someone new to this buzzword.

Geekage Galore (The Big Bang Theory)

Every situation comedy (sitcom) has to come up with a unique angle to view reality through, in the hopes of finding the humor in life. Even the “group of funny friends” situation is starting to be overdone. Friends did it. How I Met Your Mother is currently doing it (very well I might add), Seinfeld did it, etc. Then, there is The Big Bang Theory.

Despite the “situation comedy” moniker, it’s really a character comedy about characters who are, in different ways, blind to themselves. The show is based around 4 unsociable nerds and their relationship with their socially integrated neighbour, Penny (Kaley Cuoco). The four friends are Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Howard (Simon Helberg) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons).  Sheldon is so socially inept it is hilarious, with his friends having to hold up signs denoting when sarcasm is being used. It’s not a typical storyline, because the geniuses cannot function in social situations, whereas Penny is their “bridge” to the “normal”, while getting her own education on how different people function.

People who think The Big Bang Theory isn’t funny, in my opinion they are either clueless or dull and boring and probably the “laughing” part of their brain has been damaged by too many poor relationships that just didn’t “work out”. You don’t have to be a genius to find this humorous. OK, so it helps if you know some brainiac things and it does help to know who Stephen Hawking is, but this show is damn funny, quick , and witty. the jokes are funny either way. Some of the humor will fly over the heads of the audience, but that is part of the allure. However, to explain to the rest of us what on Earth the 3 geeky friends were talking about, we have the layperson’s character of “Penny.” As the genius scientists have to explain to her what they are talking about, it clues the rest of us in too. (From an article in Science Magazine, I learnt that the show has UCLA physicist on staff to help with the writing and to keep the science accurate and the uses of technical jargon are, for the most part, correct.)

Each episode is an event full of high-brow, intelligent humor the likes of which I can say I haven’t seen in a very long time. The jokes are hysterical – each episode usually has that one zinger that you will quote with your friends and the trivia is enthralling. We have added several “Sheldonisms” to our regular vocabulary! Most notable is when we’re irritated with someone, we’ll shout out “WHEEEEEATOOOOONNNNN”. Sheldon is just so “out there”.

It’s the perfect combination of silliness, sincerity, and emotional satisfaction that it brings the geek inside all of us. How can anything more be said about this guilty pleasure? This show mixes sci-fi with psy-fi brilliantly! I am in love with this delightfully witty show – totally!

Job Advertisement for Humor Specialist (Just For Laughs)

Ironically, this is the best job ad I have seen so far!! With the dark humor in the financial crisis, Treasury sure was looking for more entertainment… =). No wonder Geithner wanted the Treasury’s budget increased.

Would you have considered the job as a Humor Specialist?? If only I had worked on my humor since childhood ;)

A giant painting made from coffee beans, which was created by Russian artists, has made its way into the Guinness Book of Records. The picture, on display in Moscow’s Gorky Park in Russia shows the face of woman and cup of coffee. It measures 30 square meters (322.9 square feet) and is made of around one million coffee beans, the Telegraph reported. The creators, who have called their picture ‘Awakening‘ said they used some 180 kilograms of coffee beans to create their masterpiece. According to the organisers, the previous record was set in Albania where the picture measured 25 square metres (269 square feet). ~Deccan Chronicle

Creative Quest

Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful’ and sitting in the shade.” ~ Rudyard Kipling

When was the last time you did that? Few minutes ago before you switched to WordPress to read a new blog. But, how do you express your creativity? Has it been long enough since you splurged in your creativity? Are you wondering ‘what is my creative side’?

In the daily rush to meet deadlines and fulfill social obligations, our creative self often gets shuffled to the sidelines – Ahem…Creative Destruction!!! And that’s not a good thing as our creativity is so closely connected to our sense of self-fulfillment.

Creativity helps us to experience the magical and playful side of OUR life. It lets us explore our passions and express ourselves artistically and without inhibitions.

In my case, my preferred creative passion is sketching/painting. Ah, solace…cos that’s my exclusive time! It fills me with much joy and satisfaction, and I also get to share with others in our club where we spend many glorious hours talking about our art work. (Sharing 2 sketches of mine at the end of this blog…Tell me how you like it).

Sadly, many people don’t consider themselves creative, especially if they don’t write, paint, play music, do pottery or gardening. But that is a limited perspective of creativity. There are many weird forms of creative self-expression with different kinds of execution and levels of expertise such as getting your dog groomed like a tiger, riding roller coasters (you might become a member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts!!), play dead, appearing in the background on TV or as humble as giving $10 to strangers.

Within each and every one of us exists an artistic being just waiting for the opportunity or a simple reason to shine. Our creative expression touches us on a very personal level. It can be as simple and spontaneous as singing in the shower or the car. It can be a playful moment of making up a silly limerick or strumming chords on a guitar, OR it could be a more directed and focused activity such as sewing a quilt, cooking an exceptional meal, or making your home a special place for you and for those close to you to relax and enjoy.

If it’s been a while since you have put on your creative hat, its time to exercise your inner artist…just open yourself up, nurture and enjoy your creative side. Ahem…what are you waiting for -  dive right in?

Here are 2 of my sketches…for inspiration. ;)
