Moment of Silence

Most of us are too crunched for time and money to devote enough of either to attaining our fitness goals. In this age of information we are bombarded with incorrect advice, useless gadgets and pills, and pure hype. The health and fitness industry makes billions of dollars a year selling stuff to people that is beyond necessary (and often is not even used.)

I used to be super fit, running 10 miles a day, going to a gym and swimming on weekends. I have since grown up, got busy and become a lot less fit until I started cross-fit style. I don’t care so much about the shape of my butt as the shape of my health. I care less about the numbers of the circumference of my butt than the numbers of my blood pressure. The fact that these exercises make me look good is just a wonderful side effect!

People-watching…

I just returned from a pleasant visit to the park, where I sat on a bench and people-watched.  The park is a perfect place for this activity as there are so many people to see:  nannies pushing prams, young mothers watching children on the playground, people strolling leisurely along the walks, and professionals taking a quick run before getting ready for work while enjoying their songs on ipod.

However, in addition to just looking at the passersby, I also was also studying human behavior.  An elderly couple strolled past me, arm in arm, talking, giggling, and seeming to enjoy each other’s company.  Their giggling was a bit unexpected, but certainly pleasant.  At one point, they stopped and he kissed her on her forehead before the giggling began again and they walked on.

Near the playground, a young boy and an older woman were crouched on the ground, looking at something in the grass.  The woman, possibly a grandmother, seemed to be explaining something to the child.  Other children joined them and, suddenly, a small group was receiving what I imagined was a nature lesson.  Then, a teenage girl glided past me on roller blades, grinning wickedly, her long brown hair flowing behind her.  Behind her a young woman who was also on skates, but seemed to be having difficulty keeping up, called out, “Wait up!”

I have long been interested in how people behave and interact, what makes people tick and how they act with others.  I guess you could say that people-watching is one of my hobbies.  The best thing is that you can people-watch almost anywhere — in the park, the local bookstore, a tea or coffee shop, or even a shopping mall.  It is a very inexpensive hobby, which costs no more than the price of a cup of tea or coffee.

It can be fascinating watching our fellow human beings. If you aren’t already a people-watcher, I invite you to give it a try. You may find that it opens your mind to human nature. And you may even see aspects of yourself in others, as I sometimes do.  Regardless, you won’t be bored.

Geekage Galore (The Big Bang Theory)

Every situation comedy (sitcom) has to come up with a unique angle to view reality through, in the hopes of finding the humor in life. Even the “group of funny friends” situation is starting to be overdone. Friends did it. How I Met Your Mother is currently doing it (very well I might add), Seinfeld did it, etc. Then, there is The Big Bang Theory.

Despite the “situation comedy” moniker, it’s really a character comedy about characters who are, in different ways, blind to themselves. The show is based around 4 unsociable nerds and their relationship with their socially integrated neighbour, Penny (Kaley Cuoco). The four friends are Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Howard (Simon Helberg) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons).  Sheldon is so socially inept it is hilarious, with his friends having to hold up signs denoting when sarcasm is being used. It’s not a typical storyline, because the geniuses cannot function in social situations, whereas Penny is their “bridge” to the “normal”, while getting her own education on how different people function.

People who think The Big Bang Theory isn’t funny, in my opinion they are either clueless or dull and boring and probably the “laughing” part of their brain has been damaged by too many poor relationships that just didn’t “work out”. You don’t have to be a genius to find this humorous. OK, so it helps if you know some brainiac things and it does help to know who Stephen Hawking is, but this show is damn funny, quick , and witty. the jokes are funny either way. Some of the humor will fly over the heads of the audience, but that is part of the allure. However, to explain to the rest of us what on Earth the 3 geeky friends were talking about, we have the layperson’s character of “Penny.” As the genius scientists have to explain to her what they are talking about, it clues the rest of us in too. (From an article in Science Magazine, I learnt that the show has UCLA physicist on staff to help with the writing and to keep the science accurate and the uses of technical jargon are, for the most part, correct.)

Each episode is an event full of high-brow, intelligent humor the likes of which I can say I haven’t seen in a very long time. The jokes are hysterical – each episode usually has that one zinger that you will quote with your friends and the trivia is enthralling. We have added several “Sheldonisms” to our regular vocabulary! Most notable is when we’re irritated with someone, we’ll shout out “WHEEEEEATOOOOONNNNN”. Sheldon is just so “out there”.

It’s the perfect combination of silliness, sincerity, and emotional satisfaction that it brings the geek inside all of us. How can anything more be said about this guilty pleasure? This show mixes sci-fi with psy-fi brilliantly! I am in love with this delightfully witty show – totally!

Job Advertisement for Humor Specialist (Just For Laughs)

Ironically, this is the best job ad I have seen so far!! With the dark humor in the financial crisis, Treasury sure was looking for more entertainment… =). No wonder Geithner wanted the Treasury’s budget increased.

Would you have considered the job as a Humor Specialist?? If only I had worked on my humor since childhood ;)

‘Awakening’…Creativity at its best!!!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A giant painting made from coffee beans, which was created by Russian artists, has made its way into the Guinness Book of Records. The picture, on display in Moscow’s Gorky Park in Russia shows the face of woman and cup of coffee. It measures 30 square meters (322.9 square feet) and is made of around one million coffee beans, the Telegraph reported. The creators, who have called their picture ‘Awakening‘ said they used some 180 kilograms of coffee beans to create their masterpiece. According to the organisers, the previous record was set in Albania where the picture measured 25 square metres (269 square feet). ~Deccan Chronicle

Tangle your tongue

20120701-135811.jpg

Most of us grew up with “She sells sea shells by the seashore” and “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickeled pepper” that we were challenged to say three times fast. It was bound to break up a boring afternoon and add laughter to our day. The twisters started out easy, but by the end, our tongue was so twisted that it was hard to say anything!!

The pathetic, tongue-tripping rendition…I went to sleep securely in the knowledge that not only can I grow up to be a pilot, but that I was already smarter than my poor parents. We would laugh at the silliness while acquiring a zest for life at the same time.

Your mouth has many muscles in it and they need to be trained like any part of your body. Lots of wiggly jiggly tongue twisters will have you “giggling, groaning and guffawing” as you (try to) read each aloud…the ability to tie your tongue into knots:
The water in Flo’s Inn flows in frozen.
As a favor my favorite flavor was placed on my plate.
six sheep sipping thick shakes
two-ton trains transporting twelve three-toed turtles twist trickily on the twin tracks
Skipper Zipp’s Clipper Ship Chip Chop Shop
Rick really raved about Sal’s Spaghetti on Saturday.
a noisy noise annoys an oyster
I saw Esau sitting on a seesaw
muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle
Luke Luck likes lakes./ Luke’s duck likes lakes.

Through three cheese trees
three free fleas flew.
While these fleas flew,
freezy breeze blew.
Freezy breeze made
these three trees freeze.
Freezy trees made
these tree’s cheese freeze.
That’s what made these
three free fleas sneeze.

Tongue rolling lolling tolling so fast that you can forgive it for any errors that occur. Have fun!!
